Plutonium for a "dirty bomb" from a deputy

Information was published in "Segodnya" newspaper 2009, April, 15th

Deputy of the Ternopol regional soviet and two businessmen, trying to sell for $10 millions container with plutonium-239, the employees of SSU detained. A radiation near-by him in 250 times exceeded a natural radiation background, the head of department Valentine Nalivaychenko reported.

To the container with 3,7 kg of radioactive material was add a passport and technical description of «Good KL 28 MO USSR», given out 40 years back an enterprise-producer in Tomsk. To Ukraine a container was brought in from Russia (a source in «Rosatom» declared, that from the nuclear objects of Russian Federation nothing disappeared). As a chief of SSU said, plutonium could be used terrorists for creation of «dirty bomb». At its explosion manpower and technique is struck without a nuclear reaction — due to dispersion..

Criminals is arrested. The office of public prosecutor of area raised case on the article 265-3 CC (illegal handling radioactive materials). In what country it was planned to take out a container and who ordered him, Nalivaychenko did not have specified, but said «Segodnya», that it was however to the salespeople, to whom and where to offer him: «They are sell plutonium to any, who have possibilities of processing and absorbtion radionuclides and who would take out a container secretly. But our employees played role of buyers which risked for health, during withdrawing a container». Such plutonium has 12 countries only. Party of deputy did not expose, approval on an arrest was got quickly. Operative work was conducted «meticulously, thinly, information was collected, avoiding responsibility will not be succeeded». Guilty, already in all confessing, threatens to 15 years.
